Your Bathroom Should Say “Spa” Not “Blah”

A modern bathroom at the Montebello High Rise in Houston

I think we’re all in need of a spa day. But until that glorious time comes, our solution is to turn our master bathrooms into a spa. It’s perfectly possible with a few upgrades. Whether you’re totally renovating or simply in need of accessories, we have just the thing to make you say “spa” and not “blah.”

One of our most often requested renovation projects begin in the master bath. If you aren’t committed to completely transforming the bathroom layout, you can still have the bathroom of your dreams. Start by giving the walls a fresh coat of paint and upgrading your bathroom fixtures. Incorporate some comfy seating and remove the clutter. Add a few decorative touches, some luxurious amenities, and voila! Your bathroom transforms into a luxurious spa-like atmosphere. You’ll have a space where you can unwind and relax your mind after a chaotic week without having to leave home!

1. Update Your Color Palette

Changing the paint color in a room is one of the simplest ways to transform a space. A spa-like bathroom should be serene, calming, and leave you feeling refreshed. I love using a neutral color palette paired with an activating color to add personality, depth, and dimension. Grays and whites provide a subtle backdrop for a sophisticated, timeless bathroom. Brilliant whites do a great job of reflecting natural light, while soft grays make the bathroom feel cozier. Adding a warm, energizing color like sunny yellow activates the room and adds visual interest.

2. De-clutter and Add Extra Storage

I don’t know about you, but I’m guilty of loading up on different products, makeup, and toiletries. Having all those extras lying around definitely makes finding what I need more difficult. My new rule is that if you don’t use it every day, get rid of it! If you have trouble finding enough space to store bathroom necessities, keep what you love and dump the rest.

A clutter-free space is much more relaxing. Instead of keeping things on the counter, store them under the sink in a basket or designated drawer. (Trust me, you want to line it with a drawer liner.) There are tons of great bathroom accessories that are practical and beautiful. Find an assortment of pretty glass containers to hold cotton balls, Q-tips, and bath salts. We recommend shopping vintage for these – antique class is often sturdy and has a special provenance. We also source from Kassatex.

A chic tray with hand rolled towels keeps everything together and easily within reach. Organizing and tucking away your bathroom essentials lets you breathe easier in an instant!

3. Install New Lighting

Like any room in your home, layered lighting in your bathroom is key. To create the most flattering light in your new “spa”, use a mix of overhead and wall lighting. Sconces on either side of the mirror offer more flattering light than an overhead recessed fixture does. Super bright lighting in your bathroom doesn’t lend itself to a relaxing environment. I recommend putting all of your lighting on a dimmer. This gives you ultimate control over the ambiance of your space.

4. Upgrade Your Bathroom Fixtures

Another way to add personality to your bathroom is to replace boring bath fixtures and fittings. Go with unique pieces to add luxurious touches throughout your bathroom. I love a freestanding bathtub and floor mounted tub filler in a master bath. There’s something Old World and traditional about it. The shower head is an often forgotten about bath fixture. For me, a fabulous shower head with multiple functions is a must for a spa-like bath! Whether you prefer a rain shower head, a high-pressure massage shower head or a hand shower, there are tons of options to choose from. Updating your shower head to fit your preference is a quick way to make your bathroom feel more luxurious.

5. Bring the Outside In

Incorporating live plants and greenery into your bathroom instantly make it feel more spa-like. Plants help improve air quality and increase your energy levels to create a healthier environment. I love the beautiful pop of color and organic texture they add to a bathroom. Place eucalyptus at the front of your shower head to release a refreshing scent. Or add a snake plant to clean the air. Just make sure the plant receives enough sunlight – which for snake plants, isn’t much. They are very hearty plants that thrive even in dim areas.

6. Add Luxurious Amenities

Finally, Your At Home Spa Bathroom

Even though your bathroom is one of the most used rooms in your home it doesn’t have to feel that way. You can transform any bathroom into a fabulous spa-like oasis. Update your fixtures, add a plant, and incorporate some luxurious amenities. Then all you have to do is relax. Pour yourself a glass of wine, light a candle, put on your favorite mud mask and you’re all set!
