Moodboard Monday – Mountain Modern Design in Aspen

Today, we’re introducing a new project to the portfolio: Mountainview. This is the vacation home for our Houston-based clients, who love to stay active. Originally intended as their “ski bum” house, the home was designed with entertaining in mind. The home is just minutes from downtown Aspen and has a stunning view of the Red Mountains, hence the name. Every room greets guests with warmth and Houston hospitality through texture, scale, and a chic Mountain Modern design.

Our Mountain Home Inspiration

This was a 6 month project that we began in the summer of 2018. The clients requested that we design a home as lovely as their primary residence, but to take a cue from our surroundings. That isn’t hard to accomplish in Aspen. The home has a fabulous location that puts them close to downtown. At the same time, they enjoy a secluded hideaway boasting unobstructed mountain views. Well, unobstructed save for the verdant tops of the neighboring trees.

For this project, we began by building a story. Thinking about how the home would be loved, we considered the ski-filled winters, as well as the sunshine-soaked summers. A dramatic contrast, but in both environments we focused on nature. The home itself features wood prominently. Handsomely stained window frames enclose the landscape like dynamic paintings. The wood continues throughout the home, setting a cohesive foundation for the interiors.

We also considered functionality for this mountain home. We selected high-performing fabrics and opted for high-end faux leather in the entertaining spaces. First and foremost, the home had to be comfortable and supportive of a very active family. We re-upholstered many benchmade furnishings to have a softer hand and easier maintenance.

The Aesthetic: Mountain Modern Design

The spectacular location of this retreat drove the design aesthetic. We married the rustic feel you would expect in a mountain home with the contemporary looks you would find in the city. The result? Mountain Modern.

Our senior designer Shannon took a cue from one of America’s most beloved fashion designers, Ralph Lauren. Lauren is known for his iconic pieces, like the polo shirt and tailored suits, and is almost synonymous with American style. Ralph Lauren supplied clothing to Diane Keaton when she played the eclectic lead in Annie Hall. That now legendary look is very much aligned with our design for this home: tailored, comfortable, and unpretentiously fashion-forward.

We centered on a palette of navy, camel, and deep reds. For framing the views outside, we selected a crisp, white drapery to add contrast to the surroundings. Art inspired by the American West and elements of raffia and woven wood complete the look.

Whenever kiddos are involved, no matter their ages, we define a space that is uniquely theirs. While each child is different, we typically design playful pieces around classic basics, so that the rooms grow with the children as they mature.

Stay tuned

We are revealing more about this wonderful home in the upcoming weeks, but if you can’t wait, this home is already on our design portfolio. In the meantime, follow along on Instagram for more behind-the-scenes of our design.
