Mid-Century Moments with Ann Sacks Tile

Designed by Laura U, this master bathroom features Ann Sacks tile and warm woods.

Over the past month, we have introduced you to our Green Tree project. Tucked away on a quiet street in Houston’s Tanglewood neighborhood (home to former president George H.W. Bush), Green Tree is a testament to mid-century design. This is exactly what the homeowners were searching for when they stumbled across this traditional ranch-style home. Strong curb appeal, large windows, and a great floorplan appealed to our clients’ favorite time in style history.

While their existing collection of mid-century furnishings found thoughtful placement throughout the home, the kitchen and bathrooms needed a full design overhaul. These are often the rooms that make a home feel dated. During our inspiration presentation, our design team selected an array of stunning Ann Sacks tiles to wow our clients.

Ann Sacks is one of our go-to resources when we select tile. “Our client is keeping this is as their forever home and when we presented the Ann Sacks tile, they fell in love,” says our Senior Designer, Shannon Smith, who led this project. “Ann Sacks had these special pieces that I knew would go well with their aesthetic.”

In the Kitchen

Modern Field Tile in Rectangle

For the kitchen, we selected the MADE Modern Rectangle in New Lagoon. This beautiful shade makes a handsome complement to the all walnut cabinetry from Poggenpohl. Mid-century design is full of well-crafted millwork in walnut, punctuated by over-saturated hues of tangerine and turquoise. Our approach is more modern and subtle.

In the Powder Bath

Beau Monde Mosaic in Marilyn

All of the bathrooms feature custom, walnut millwork, which speaks directly to the mid-century era. In the powder bath, we paired that with an equally well-known element of that time: warm, saturated color. Applying this mosaic here energizes the space with the joyful exuberance associated with orange hues. At times fiery and at others subdued, the glass tile moves to its own melody. One of our client’s favorites!

In the Owner’s Retreat

Modern Field Tile in Peaked Diamond Curved

Our clients travel often and wanted their owner’s retreat to embrace them with spa-like comfort whenever they were home. We selected a blue mist shade to impart a feeling of serenity and calm. You will also find a play on mixed metals between the fixtures and hardware. The massive window pours in natural light to the soaking tub, our favorite feature.

In the Guest Bath

Modern Field Tile in Ribbed Moon

Guests will find themselves not wanting to leave in their private and wonderfully thoughtful guest suite. The ribbed moon pattern of the tile is contemporary and romantic, with a glaze that gracefully changes from each direction. The same tile above the vanity is incorporated into the shower as well. The ribbing is absolutely hypnotic.
